Daymer Bay's Wizard of Wit to Revive Ancient Cornish Game at Beach Art Festival
Polzeath is set to witness a remarkable revival of the age-old Cornish game of nurdling, thanks to the enthusiasm and local knowledge of Daymer Bay residents, Michael Gover and Caroline Ogilvie. Michael, a familiar face to many who frequent the Polzeath Spar, where his quick wit and dazzling magic tricks have puzzled locals and visitors alike.
The origins of the game date back to Polzeath miners in the 1850's up until a filmed 1968 St Minver to Rock nurdling contest.
"When I read about the history of nurdling and its connection to the Pentire miners, I knew this was something special we needed to bring back," Michael explained. "It's a fantastic way to celebrate an old game."
Michael proposes a reimagined nurdling course, one that stretches along the scenic Greenaway, linking Daymer Bay to Polzeath. This new route would not only take the route off the dangerous main roads but also create a symbolic bridge between the two communities who have in the past fought over crates of figs washed ashore on Greenaway. Actually a true story for another day!
We invite anyone with an interest in the lost game of nurdling, or any tales to tell, to come forward and be part of the revival of this event.
With your support, the ancient Cornish game of nurdling is set to roll once more!
