"As I reach our hill, I am part of a sea unseen"
Join a gentle, reflective ramble through the spiritual home of Britain’s most beloved Poet Laureate. Journey through the verses of Betjeman’s childhood and the landscapes that defined some of his best work.
What to Expect:
The Greenaway Cliffs: We begin by tracing the path where "purple-and-green-striped rocks" meet the Atlantic. Hear readings from Trebetherick as we watch the waves "roaring up the beach" just as Betjeman did as a boy.
Daymer Bay & Brea Hill: We’ll stroll across the golden sands of Daymer Bay, framed by the "silver snake of the estuary". For those up for it, a short detour up Brea Hill offers panoramic views of the Doom Bar—the legendary sandbar said to be cursed by a mermaid.
The Church in the Sands: We’ll cross the historic St Enodoc Golf Course—where Betjeman famously penned Seaside Golf—to reach the tiny, lopsided St Enodoc Church. Once buried so deep in sand that the vicar had to enter through the roof, this peaceful sanctuary is now Sir John’s final resting place and has many stories to tell in the surrounding graves.
Hidden Histories: I'll show you the houses associated with Betjeman and explain links that Betjeman had to people who still live here.Â
Why Join?
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Betjeman or simply love the Cornish coast, this walk offers a unique literary perspective on the Polzeath/Trebetherick/Daymer Bay landscape. I encourage you to bring your favourite Betjeman poem to share as we pause for reflections overlooking the estuary.
Practicalities:
Footwear: Trainers or walking shoes are fine for this sandy, mostly flat terrain.
Dogs: Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Booking: Please reserve your spot at least 24 hours in advanceÂ
Come along and see why, for Betjeman, "all things draw toward St. Enodoc".
